POLITICS/BENIN: Failed Coup: Several Beninese See It as a Hoax

The recent arrest of figures close to power, accused of attempted Coup, has shocked many and divided public opinion. While some believe that it is a simple set-up to distract the population, others believe in the veracity of the accusations and call on justice to shed light on this sensitive issue.

“When I observe from afar what is happening, where the population says that the President’s best faithful friend is an author, I tell myself that it makes me smile. Why? Because, you know, who killed Thomas Sankara? It was his best friend who killed him. They are the real actors, the architects of President Patrice Talon’s governance. Justice must get to the bottom of this case so that we can truly know if he is guilty, because yesterday, he was heard by the judge and the prosecutor, and he denied having any involvement in this plot. It is true that he was placed in detention, which means that investigations are continuing to shed light on the truth. It is when Olivier Boko and his accomplice are sentenced that I will be convinced of their involvement in this coup d’état project. Otherwise, for the moment, they are in preventive detention, but there is no proof of their guilt. They could be released tomorrow. Olivier Boko cannot be so naive, he who stayed alongside Patrice Talon for more than twenty years, to throw himself into such an enterprise. It is reckless. When we see this, we are not far from a scenario fabricated from scratch to distract us. I would even say that the various pieces of the scene were poorly staged, and it is difficult to believe that this is a real plan for an attempted coup d’état.

Besides, the President of the Republic has nothing to fear from a coup d’état since he does not intend to remain in power beyond his second term. For me, this case is too easy to be true. You cannot consider carrying out a coup d’état and rely on a Commander of the Republican Guard. Even a child of the CI would tell you that all this looks like a poorly put together scenario. As someone said a few years ago, there is something unclear down there.

Let's say that this is the first major test of the Rupture's power since 2016. We saw these two people, Patrice Talon and Olivier Boko, come to power together, and travel together until today. Even if there were some disagreements, particularly because of Olivier Boko's ambitions, nothing prepared us for it to happen so quickly. It's true that I thought it would end like this, but I was not prepared, like public opinion, for it to happen so quickly. This is only the beginning, and there will certainly be a lot of upheaval on the political scene.

There are elements that give rise to doubts. When we hear Colonel Tévoèdjrè, Commander of the Presidential guard, say that he never discussed an attempted coup with Olivier Boko, or when Oswald Homeky claims, according to his lawyers, that he does not acknowledge the facts he is accused of, we say to ourselves that something is wrong. The person supposed to orchestrate the Coup did not even acknowledge having discussed with Olivier Boko, who is nevertheless accused of being one of the main instigators.

I do not want to question the decision of the Beninese justice system, which remains transparent and acts according to the evidence presented to it. We are waiting to see what happens next. The lawyers for the accused have promised to do everything in their power to prove the innocence of their clients. This is what all the Beninese people want, because no one wants this division between people who have ruled the country together. »
