The Franco-Guinean Cultural Center (CCFG) vibrated to the rhythm of the 7th art, this Friday, September 27, 2024, with the preview screening of eight Guinean short films. This landmark event, the result of the "Sabou Ciné Talents" program, brought together many personalities from the world of culture, including Moussa Moïse Sylla, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Crafts, alongside several other members of the government. Films which, despite the difficulties, testify to the vitality and talent of the new generation of Guinean filmmakers.
Films rooted in Guinean realities
The eight works presented that evening – Farenghia, Baddjo An On, Woniléagui, Ton Mari C’est Ton Dieu, TDA 7294, La Couleur de l’Esprit, Les Écumes du Bonheur and Regardez le Soleil – are the result of a long process initiated in October 2023 as part of “Sabou Ciné Talents”. This project, led by SabouTech in partnership with Africa Digital Académie and the Sat Media group, aims to identify and support young talents in the Guinean film sector.
These short films, divided into four fictions and four documentaries, reflect the realities of daily life in Guinea. According to Thierno Souleymane Diallo, general coordinator of the program, the films all share a common vision: “They all have a view of daily life in Guinea”. This authentic and local dimension was highlighted by Moussa Moïse Sylla, who expressed his admiration for the work of young filmmakers: "These are films made by an expert hand despite all the difficulties related to production. They reflect our collective imagination, our social realities." An ambitious project to propel Guinean cinema The "Sabou Ciné Talents" initiative represents an important step towards the professionalization of cinema in Guinea. The Minister of Culture, visibly moved, praised the efforts made by these young directors, while reaffirming the State's commitment to supporting them. "We just need to create the environment that will allow them to flourish," he said, promising that the government will provide the necessary resources to encourage this new generation of artists. For his part, Abdoulaye Diogo Barry, General Manager of SabouTech, was delighted with the success of this first edition: "The objective has been achieved, we have shown that we can make a film of international quality here in Guinea. We had difficulties, but the efforts paid off. Now, we must persevere." Indeed, he did not hide his ambitions for the years to come, promising that SabouTech will continue to produce around ten films each year in order to give young filmmakers the opportunity to realize their dreams. A promising future for Guinean cinema This major event of the 7th art has demonstrated that a new momentum is blowing through Guinean cinema. With the support of partners such as the French Embassy in Guinea and Sierra Leone, SabouTech and Le Grenier de l'Ombre, the Sabou Ciné Talents project has overcome obstacles to offer quality productions. The spectators, as well as the officials present, unanimously praised the quality of the films, giving rise to hope for a renewal of cinema in Guinea.
As this preview ends, a new page seems to be written for the Guinean film industry. Thanks to the supervision and support of projects such as "Sabou Ciné Talents", young local talents now have a platform to express themselves and share their vision of the world. With initiatives like this, the future of Guinean cinema seems more promising than ever.
