ECONOMY/SENEGAL: French soldiers, FCFA...: The decision has been made, “what we are doing…”

In an interview with Bés Bi, Alla Kane, a prominent member of Magui Pastef and advisor in the cabinet of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, expressed radical opinions on the French military presence in Senegal and on the FCFA. According to him, the country could benefit from better autonomy by breaking away from the French army and the currency inherited from colonization.

“We are on the verge of ending the presence of the French army in Senegal,” says Mr. Kane. “Let them go!” It is a symbol of sovereignty. Maintaining this French military presence is a reminder that we are not yet completely independent.” In a passionate speech, the patriot underlines: “You will never see Senegalese soldiers in France. Today we are talking about military, food and digital sovereignty. Let them go! They have to go! ". According to Le Témoin, the French military presence will be reduced from nearly 500 men to around 260 by next June.

Faced with skeptics about the possibility of an exit from the CFA franc, Alla Kane affirms: “Everything is possible. You just need to have the will. We have gotten people so accustomed to this currency that the very idea of leaving it is seen as catastrophic.” Sonko's advisor is convinced that Senegal can follow the example of other former French colonies which have succeeded in their monetary transition. “France colonized Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Cambodia, Vietnam; all these countries have managed to create their own currency while we are still in the grip of serious economic difficulties, largely because of this instrument,” emphasizes Alla Kane.

According to Magui member Pastef, “Senegal has the capacity to leave the CFA franc and create its own currency before the end of the first term of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye”. “We have experienced economists capable of making this idea a reality,” he insists.
