Initiated at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to relieve the populations of Greater Libreville, the measure of free public transport has just benefited from a credit line in the 2024 finance bill. This social measure will continue throughout throughout the 2024 financial year for a total cost of 3.5 billion CFA francs.
The marriage between the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) and social initiatives seems to be working well for the happiness of the Gabonese population. Established in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic and continued, a few months later, with the aim of supporting the weakest sectors, the measure of free public transport is gradually integrating the list of commitments of public authorities vis-à-vis the population.
In their vast operation to restore institutions during the transition period in Gabon, the CTRI authorities give an important place to actions to combat the high cost of living and support the weakest sectors. Thus, in the 2024 finance bill, a credit line relating to free land transport was included in the amount of 3,571,445,596 CFA francs distributed between the three public transport companies operating in Greater Libreville. In particular, TransUrb (1,417,937,796 FCFA), Sogatra (1,673,200,000 FCFA) and TransAkanda (480,307,800 FCFA).
Included in the State budget expenditure for the 2024 financial year, set at the sum of 2,568,851,281,920 FCFA, free land transport is added to transfer expenditure set at the amount of 352218537596 FCFA compared to 255784359 837 in 2023, an increase of 38%.
