AFRICA/AU Summit on Industrialization and Economic Diversification: Niger ready to host the event from November 20 to 25

AU Summit on Industrialization and Economic Diversification

From November 20 to 25, 2022, Niger will host the African Union (AU) Summit on Industrialization and Economic Diversification. This important continental business meeting will be placed under the theme: “Industrialize Africa: Renewing commitments to inclusive and sustainable industrialization and economic diversification”. At the end of a restitution meeting organized by ANEC and the Ministry of Industry, on Saturday October 9, 2022 at the International Conference Center, it appears that the various committees set up within the framework of the organization of the said event presented their work and everyone agrees that ''everything is progressing well and that Niger is ready to host, on the scheduled dates, this Summit dedicated to industrialization and economic diversification in Africa, during which some sixty activities are planned''.

This restitution meeting, which aims to take stock and that of the progress of the preparations for the event, took place in the presence, in particular, of the Minister of Industry and Youth Entrepreneurship, Mrs. Salamatou Gourouza Magagi, the Director General of the National Agency for the Economy of Conferences (ANEC), Mr. Mohamed Saidil Moctar, the Representative of the AU Commission, Mrs. Ron Omar Osman, officials from the Ministry Trade.

Thus, after five days of meetings, exchanges and field visits, Minister Salamatou Gourouza Magagi reaffirmed Niger's availability, capacity and pride in hosting and organizing this continental Summit. “During the last summit in November 2021, the Heads of State and Government of the AU reiterated their commitments and asked Niger to take charge of the organization of this summit. Ultimately, this summit aims for the economic industrialization of the continent, which is a flagship project of the African Union's 2063 agenda. Since then, Niger has set to work to honor this commitment. Thus, today, October 8, 2022, a little over a month before this meeting, I can say that Niger is ready to host this continental event. There are only a few protocol issues left to settle and we are working on them. Meetings and exchanges are planned each week to fine-tune all aspects. No detail will be left to chance and Niger will play its part, both in the organization of the event and in its full participation and the success of this summit,” promised the Minister.

For his part, the CEO of ANEC, Mr. Mohamed Saidil Moctar argued that Niger is in the African Continental Economic Free Trade Area. “I can assure you that the authorities of Niger, as a whole but also ANEC, are strongly committed to the organization of this summit so that it is a total success, and we are confident in this that the conclusions of this summit allow economic development of the continent,” he said.

As for the AU Representative, Mrs. Ron Omar Osman, she indicated that this Summit will be organized as part of the annual commemorative activities of Africa Industrialization Week. “Given the importance of industrialization and economic transformation in Africa, the 20th of November each year is observed as Africa Industrialization Day, which has been adopted by the Conference of Chief Executives State and Government of the Organization of African Unity, in July 1989, in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). Africa Industrialization Day provides an opportunity for key stakeholders to reflect on Africa's industrialization, while considering how the continent can change its current status quo. Since 2018, Africa Industrialization Day has been celebrated through week-long events, marking a break from the one-day tradition, providing more time for reflection and accelerating action in Africa's structural transformation as an instrument to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ”, she said.

This approach, according to Ms. Osman, is in line with the continent's desire to lead a structural transformation, based on the exploitation of Africa's rich and varied natural resources, while taking advantage of current technological progress, from geopolitical trends to continental and global levels and the emergence of tradable services. Mrs. Ron Omar Osman said that during her stay of more than a week in Niger, she noted the mobilization, "as one man", of the authorities, organizers, administrative officials, private individuals, in short, of all the actors, for the holding and the success of this Summit. “I will report, in Addis Ababa, and therefore to the African Union, on the enthusiasm, the mobilization and the actions carried out for a resounding success of what should already be called ''the Niamey Summit”, she declared. This Summit, it is recalled, aims to highlight Africa's determination and renewed commitment to industrialization as one of the strategic pillars for achieving the objectives of economic growth and development of the continent, as articulated in Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030. Considering the key and strategic interdependencies between industrialization and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement, this continental event aims to mobilize the desired political momentum, resources, partnerships and alliances for the industrialization of Africa, explain the organizers.
